V405 Peg - prototype of low-luminosity magnetic CVs?
Abstract
V405 Peg (RBS1955) is a nearby, high-latitude CV discovered by ROSAT. Detailed optical follow-up suggests a likely magnetic nature, a possible linking system between polars and intermediate polars. Its spectral energy distribution with a large optical excess is a-typical for either class. We propose follow-up with XMM-Newton for timing and spectroscopy to determine its energy budget and likely accretion scenario. V405 Peg-like CVs might be important contributors to the yet unresolved galactic hard X-ray emission and knowledge of their X-ray properties is thus important for models of the galactic X-ray emission.
