Trace element concentrations in mangrove sediments in the Sundarbans, Bangladesh
Abstract
Coastal lands cover 6% of the world's land surface (Tiner and Tiner, 1984). Coastal and wetlands everywhere are under threat from agricultural intensification, pollution, major engineering schemes and urban development (UN-ESCAP, 1987, 1988). The Indo-Pacific region is known for its luxuriant mangroves. The distribution of mangroves in the Indo-West Pacific bio-geographical region has been outlined in Macnae (1968). However, the mangroves in half of these countries, as well as those of other regions, have since been destroyed through various pollution problems and population pressure (Peters and Darling, 1985).
