Supernova 2009em in NGC 157
Abstract
H. Navasardyan and S. Benetti, Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica, Osservatorio Astronomico di Padova, report that a spectrogram (range 360-740 nm, resolution 1.4 nm) of 2009em (cf. CBET 1798), obtained on May 19.37 UT with the European Southern Observatory New Technology Telescope (+ EFOSC2), shows it to be an evolved type-Ic supernova, about 2 months after the explosion. Assuming a recession velocity of 1652 km/s (from H I Parkes All Sky Survey Final Catalogue, 2006; via NED) for the host galaxy, the "GELATO" spectrum-comparison code (Harutyunyan et al. 2008, A.Ap. 488, 383; available at https://gelato.tng.iac.es) provides good fits to a spectrum of the type-Ic supernova 2007gr (Valenti et al. 2008, Ap.J. 673, L155) taken 52 days after the B-band maximum light. The red continuum may imply non-negligible extinction for SN 2009em.
