Analysis of Jovian Jets Observed by Pioneer 10/11 and Ulysses
Abstract
Before and after the first Jupiter approach of the Ulysses spacecraft in 1992, the observation of 35 short lived, highly anisotropic jets of MeV-electrons within a distance from the planet of 0.8 AU were reported. In 2003/04, when the spacecraft approached the planet again up to a distance of about 0.8 AU, these finding were confirmed by the detection of 15 events in the range of 0.8 to 2.2 AU distance to Jupiter. In order to look for Jovian jets in other spacecraft data, we re-examined Pioneer 10 and 11 data. We found 20 events attributed to be Jovian jets in the Pioneer 10 data and 18 events in the Pioneer 11 data. In this contribution we compare the Ulysses and Pioneer observations and discuss the implications for the transport of Jovian electrons in the IMF. Especially the idea of charged particle propagation in heliospheric flux tubes will be discussed with respect to the detection of Jupiter's 10h modulation in interplanetary space.
