Optical properties of subvisual cirrus from OSIRIS
Abstract
This work investigates the optical properties of subvisual cirrus clouds observed by OSIRIS. Retrievals of cloud extinction are performed with a fully spherical radiative transfer model that incorporates the scattering properties of highly nonspherical ice crystals. The T-matrix and Discrete Dipole Approximation algorithms are investigated for their accuracy in cloud retrievals. OSIRIS - the limb-viewing Optical Spectrograph and InfraRed Imaging System on the Odin satellite - has been in operation since 2001 and provides a global nine-year record of cirrus cloud optical properties.
