Coordinated Investigation Programs: a status report
Abstract
The building blocks of the IHY science program are the CIPs - the Coordinated Investigation Programs. Following a "bottom-up" philosophy, these are essentially autonomous investigations proposed and executed by self-selected groups of scientists that span the range of IHY science. Naturally, there are points of contact and overlap between the subjects of study of the various CIPS. To permit an easier appreciation of the scope of the program and of the connections between CIPs, and also to promote collaboration between them, the CIPs have therefore been grouped into seven "Disciplines": Solar; Heliospheric/Cosmic Rays; Magnetospheres; Ionized atmospheres; Neutral atmospheres; Climate; Meteors/Meteoroids/Interstellar Dust. A report will be given on the status of the CIPs and on the effectiveness of the mechanisms established for the IHY to support them individually and to build connections between them.
