Planetary nebulae, novae and the abundance discrepancy
Abstract
A long-standing problem in the study of ionized nebulae is the discrepancy between abundances determined from different types of emission lines. Underpinning our understanding of emission lines and abundances in astrophysical environments are high-quality atomic data. Mike Seaton was of course a major player in improving our knowledge in this area, and his work has undoubtedly been a major driver in pushing forward our understanding of planetary nebulae. Here I discuss the possible solutions to the abundance discrepancy problem, and some recent work I have done in this area.
