Towards a dual description of QCD
Abstract
Recently, the AdS/CFT correspondence showed it was possible to understand certain strongly coupled gauge theories in terms of string theory. Applying those ideas to QCD is not straight-forward and can proceed in two ways: deforming known examples of AdS/CFT to include theories closer to QCD or understanding the mechanism for emergence of strings in the known examples and apply those methods to QCD. In this talk I describe some recent work done in these two approaches and in which I was involved. One is the computation of the meson spectrum for certain strongly coupled gauge theories and the other is a direct relation between operators and strings in a particular sector of N = 4 SYM.
