A new Mississippian red alga from south-western Spain
Abstract
Maimonachaetetes hispanica nov. gen., nov. sp. is described as a primitive red alga due to the presence of a coaxial dimerous thallus composed of tiny cellular structures with occasional cell fusion. It is recorded from Asbian (Mississippian) strata at Los Santos de Maimona Basin (south-western Spain). The species shows many characters in common with the Paleozoic Archaeolithophyllum and the solenoporaceans, but also with modern Corallinales.
