Marine Investigations of Greece'sSantorini Volcanic Field
Abstract
The most recent major explosive eruptionof the Santorini volcano in Greece-around3600 years before present (B.P.), oftenreferred to as the Minoan eruption-is oneof the largest volcanic events known in historicaltime and has been the subject ofintense volcanological and archeologicalstudies[ Druitt et al.//], 1999]. The submarinevolcano Kolumbo, located seven kilometersnortheast of Santorini and associated withSantorini's tectonic system, erupted explosivelyin 1650 A.D., resulting in fatalities onthe island of Thera [Fouqué//], 1879]. A largefraction of the erupted products from theMinoan eruption has been deposited in thesea but, up to now, only has been studied indistal marine sediments.
