Study of Lower Hybrid Waves in the Shock Front
Abstract
One key aspect of the physics of collisionless shocks is the redistribution of energy of the incoming ion flow that involves energisation of electrons. This process may be efficiently carried out in the presence of lower hybrid waves since they are resonant with both ions and electrons. This paper examines Cluster observations of the electric field in the foot of a quasiperpendicular shock front for evidence of lower hybrid waves and discusses the findings in relation to the electron heating process.
