Dynamic Processes in Silica: Impact and Radiation Effects
Abstract
Impact and radiation (by photons, ions and neutrons) processes are ubiquitous in terrestrial, planetary and optical materials. Using silica as a paradigm, we investigate impact agglomeration of nano-particles, fragmentation and spall, and phase changes as well as radiation effect on silica glass. Molecular dynamics simulations address all these issues. Besides simulations, we also conduct experiments by accelerating charged particles to study impact of micro- and nano-particles.
