Sharing Earth Sciences Data With the World Using Google Earth
Abstract
Earth scientists measure and derive fundamental data that can be of broad general interest to the public and policy makers. Yet it can be difficult to reach this audience and present this important information in an easy- to-use, compelling and meaningful context. Google Earth offers a popular and useful virtual globe for the presentation of earth sciences data, including real- time data feeds and dense raster datasets. Earthquakes, volcanoes, weather and climate change have already been successfully visualized in Google Earth and have garnered significant public interest. This talk will outline several methods for using Google Earth to share earth sciences data with a broad audience. We'll also describe the new Google Earth Outreach project (GEO),which supports non-profit, public benefit uses of Google Earth.
