Interaction of Enceladus' gas plume with Saturn's magnetosphere
Abstract
Measurements by the Cassini spacecraft from three Enceladus flybys in February, March and July 2005 established the existence of a gas plume originating from Enceladus' south pole. We study the magnetic field and plasma measurements of these flybys, both, with an analytic Alfven wing model and a series of three- dimensional two-fluid plasma simulations. Through comparison with the observations, our model constrains basic properties of the interaction such as strength and extension of the interaction region. But we also provide constraints on density and structure of the gas plume, i.e. how the neutral density falls off with radial and angular distance from the center of the plumes.
