Rapid polar motion during the 2005-2006 winter season
Abstract
During the 2005-2006 winter season, loops of amplitude around 10 cm or below were detected in the Earth's polar motion, which was running very slowly due to a cancellation of the two main oscillations. After cross- checking with the latest meteorological data, their origins were found in several continental-scale high or low pressure systems, especially on Northern America and Europe, helped by similar pheonomenon over Southern Pacific.
