XMM-Newton observations of NGC 2547: The coronae of low-mass stars at 30 Myr
Abstract
We propose a deep EPIC survey of the open cluster NGC 2547 to characterise coronal emission from low mass stars at an accurately known age of 30 Myr. By investigating X-ray luminosity functions, coronal temperatures and occurrence rates for large flares in stars with masses above and below the fully convective boundary, we will test ideas that pre-main sequence magnetic activity is driven by a different dynamo to that in older stars. Such observations are crucial in establishing the intensity and duration of high energy irradiation of the circumstellar environments of young stars. NGC 2547 is an excellent target for XMM-Newton; there are 150 low-mass stars in the EPIC FOV including 60 spectroscopically confirmed objects with mass 0.07-0.5 Msun.
