How to measure the gas mass: predictions for JCMT, APEX, Herschel and SOFIA
Abstract
Two fundamental questions in the context of these debris disks are: 1) How much gas is left in the disks? 2) What is the nature of the gas in the disk: primordial gas or outgassing comets? We present here a parameter study using disk models that span a range of 4 orders of magnitude in disk mass (1.5 10^{-4} - 1.5 10^{-8} M_Sun). Integrated line emission for various tracers - CO, O, C+ - is computed as a function of disk mass for present and upcoming observing facilities such as ALMA, SOFIA and Herschel.
