Fluxgate Magnetometers for the Magnetosphere Multiscale Mission
Abstract
The fluxgate magnetometers for the four Magnetosphere Multiscale spacecraft are based on the highly successful magnetometer design for the ST5 mission. These magnetometers will return data at 128 Hz to the Data Processing Unit where it will be either stored at full rate in the burst processor or averaged to the survey mode data rate (16 Hz). The magnetometer provides 0.005 nT resolution with a post in flight calibration accuracy of 0.1 nT. The magnetometer works together with the electron drift instrument (EDI) to measure the electric field perpendicular to the magnetic field and uses (EDI) to assess the accuracy of the magnetometer zero level. The magnetometer provides key measurements for exploring reconnection, waves and turbulence in geospace as well as supporting information for the study of particle distributions and wave propagation.
