ULF Waves in the Kronian Magnetosphere
Abstract
Recent magnetic field observations made onboard the Cassini spacecraft in the magnetosphere of planet Saturn show the existence of a variety of ultra low frequency plasma waves. Their frequency suggests that they are probably not eigenoscillations of the entire magnetospheric system, but excitations confined to selected regions of the magnetosphere. The spatial distribution of selected events from Cassinis past orbits will be presented as well as an overview of the wave properties of these oscillations and a comparison of individual events to each other. A statistical survey of the present results will serve as a foundation to explore these waves with respect to their wave properties, propagation characteristics, source mechanism and importance to the overall dynamics of the Kronian magnetosphere.
