Vacuum-Field Mechanical Action on a Single Ion

In an experiment with a single trapped barium ion we demonstrate that a laser-excited atom whose surrounding electromagnetic vacuum field is modified by a distant mirror experiences vacuum-induced forces which notably change its trapping conditions.
