Flares and wave activities related to CMEs
Abstract
CMEs and flares are the two most energetic transient solar activities that have severe impacts on geo-space environment and human technological systems. While it is well known that they are often associated, the physical relationship between the two phenomena has not been understood. The views regarding the relations have been evolving in the past several decades, from flare-dominant view before 1980s to a CME-dominant view in 1990s. I will present recent progresses on this issue, including analysis on full kinematic evolution of CMEs, detailed correlation between CME motions and flare emissions, and disparity of size/location between CMEs and flares. The recent findings indicate that the two phenomena are strongly physically coupled when they occur together. The coronal wave/dimming activities related to CMEs/flares will also be discussed.
