Proton Therapy:. Accelerator Aspects and Procedures
Abstract
Based on advanced accelerator technology proton therapy (PT) is going to become a powerful tool in cancer treatment. We describe a PT equipment based on a superconducting 250 MeV proton cyclotron. Superconductivity is used to provide advantageous design options for the essential components within the cyclotron. The main subsystems of the accelerator equipment from the proton source to the patient rooms with some so-called gantries are described as well as the principles of scanning the beam over a maximum field size.
