Electronic Density Changes and Structural Phase Transitions in Dense Gas Hydrates
Abstract
Gas clathrate hydrates obtained by compression are used to study gas-water molecule interaction as a function of density. We have carried out X-ray diffraction experiments using synchrotron radiation on Kr and Xe hydrates compressed in diamond anvil cells. Using the maximum entropy method in conjunction of Rietveld refinements of the X-ray diffraction patterns, we show how the electronic density changes in dense gas hydrates leading to structural phase transformations at high pressure.
