Fundamental tests of electrodynamic theories: Conceptual investigations of the Trouton-Noble and hidden momentum effects
Abstract
In this paper we review certain controversial aspects of some experimental tests of electromagnetic forces and fields that imply unexpected and novel predictions of standard classical electrodynamics. Among the recent theoretical and experimental investigations in this field, we focus on a modified version of the Trouton-Noble experiment for which a non-null result is predicted. Another investigation deals with the correct expression of the force on a magnetic dipole that accounts for the hidden</em> momentum and, thus, differs from the standard expression usually used in classical electrodynamics. The conceptual details of the experimental arrangements that can be used for the realization of these two tests are outlined.
