The BIG-2 module and its experiment are a continuation of the BIG module, which flew successfully on MAXUS 3 on November 24, 1998. The BIG-2 experiment module flew on the MAXUS 5 on April 1, 2003. The BIG-2 module carried the experiment named "Biological Gravity Dependency by way of Microtubule Reaction-Diffusion Processes". The Principal Investigator of this experiment is Dr. J. Tabony, CEA, Grenoble, France. The experiment module performed excellent throughout the scientific reference test on ground and the entire flight. However, at the unfortunately hard landing of the MAXUS 5 payload the thermal control of the BIG-2 experiment unit stopped which lead to a loss of scientific data. The Swedish Space Corporation with DTM Technologies and Lambda-X as sub-contractors have developed the experiment module, under contract from ESA. This paper focuses on the technical description of the module.
