Surface-enhanced Raman scattering in periodic and semi-periodic metal-dielectric films
Abstract
The surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) for periodic and semi-periodic metal dielectric films is studied both theoretically and experimentally. We obtained strong enhancement of the local fields for variety of lattice geometries, wavelengths of illumination and metal types. The Raman response is found to depend strongly on the ratio between inter-particle distances and single particle diameters. For a given source wavelength there is an optimal inter-particle distance, which correspond to strong enhancement of the local fields and lead to enormous increase of the Raman sensitivity. Effects based on light polarizations and particle distributions are discussed. The theoretical predictions for the Raman enhancement factor in gold semi-periodic arrays are found to be in good agreement with the experimental measurements.
