The Astronomical Society of the Pacific-Creating Partnerships to Communicate Astronomy
Abstract
The 115-year old ASP has become one of the nation's leading organizations devoted primarily to increasing public awareness, understanding, and enjoyment of astronomy and space science. In this poster we intend to give an overview of the current programs and projects in public outreach, informal education, and K-14 formal education. Primary partners and/or funders for these projects include ASP members, NSF, NASA, and dozens of educational and research organizations. Ongoing programs include: Project ASTRO (astronomer/teacher partnerships), Family ASTRO (community based family activities), Night Sky Network (helping amateur astronomers do more effective public outreach), SOFIA Education/Public Outreach (in partnership with the SETI Institute), Universe in the Classroom (web-based teachers newsletter), Cosmos in the Classroom (conference/workshops supporting community/small college astronomy instruction), and Mercury (the ASP's own members magazine). The ASP continues to search for new partnership opportunities to improve astronomy/space science education and outreach.
