Peculiar Chemical Properties and Chemical Identification of the Superheavy Elements
Abstract
With larger Z, the electronic structure of atoms is increasingly influenced by "relativistic effects". As a result, some chemical properties of very heavy elements might not strictly follow the trends observed for their lighter congeners in the appropriate groups of the Mendeleev System. Such peculiarities are of utmost interest primarily for fundamental science but also because they might enhance or hamper the chemical identification of "superheavy" nuclides. The situation is illustrated for element 112.
