Prospects for Symmetry Breaking in String Theory
Abstract
We examine the possibility of breaking of Lorentz and CPT invariance in string theory, using the formalism of string field theory. Some recent developments in the open string field theory are highlighted, which have vindicated this formalism's potential to examine stringy nonperturbative effects. A mechanism for spontaneous breaking of Lorentz invariance in string field theory is reviewed, along with resulting low-energy signals. The issue of stability of classical solutions in cubic lagrangians is addressed, as are closed string degrees of freedom. Finally we mention the emergence of noncommutative field theory in string theory, and the resulting Lorentz breaking.
