The Burden and the Promise of Scientific Research in Difficult Times
Abstract
The beginning of the twenty-first century finds scientists living and working under conditions of great material hardship at a number of locations around the world. They support their family with difficulty and, although deprived of dignity, they nevertheless continue to dedicate themselves to works of inspiration and vision. This communication revisits similar circumstances over the past two centuries, observing that difficult times can lead to new ways of approaching old problems. The communication concludes with a proposal for expanding world-wide experience with space science.
