Since 1998, we have been conducting a large scale survey for dark clouds on the basis of the Digitized Sky Survey I using a star count technique. The aim of the survey is to produce a precise atlas and a quantitative catalogue of dark clouds covering the entire galactic plane. We have recently completed an extinction (i.e., AV) map for the whole region defined by the galactic latitude |b| <= 40 deg. The map was first created at a 2' rectangular resolution, and then smoothed with a 6' gaussian resolution (FWHM) to reduce the noise level down to <=0.5 mag (∼3σ). Based on the map, we attempt to identify dark clouds under certain criteria. Up to June 2002, we have made a list of more than 5000 clouds (or clumps inside clouds) and have measured the parameters such as the surface areas and the peak extinction values. In this paper, we introduce the latest status of our survey.
