Supernova 2002ea in NGC 820
Abstract
T. Puckett, Mountain Town, GA; and J. Newton, Osoyoos, BC, report the discovery of an apparent supernova (mag 17.7) on an unfiltered CCD frame (limiting mag 18.8) taken with the Puckett Observatory 0.35-m automated patrol telescope on July 21.35 UT. SN 2002ea is located at R.A. = 2h08m25s.08, DEC. = +14o20'52".8 (equinox 2000.0), which is 1".3 east and 6".2 south of the center of NGC 820. The new object was confirmed on CCD frames taken on July 22.38 by Puckett with a 0.60-m reflector, but it does not appear on unfiltered images taken by Puckett on 2001 Nov. 11, 22, 2002 Jan. 13, and Feb. 2 (limiting mag about 20.5) or on Palomar Sky Survey images taken on 1991 Oct. 12, 1990 Nov. 18 (limiting mag about 21.0), and 1950 Aug. 14 (limiting mag about 19.7).
