Destruction of bulk ordering by surface randomness
Abstract
We demonstrate that arbitrarily weak disorder on a surface of a system of continuous symmetry destroys long-range order in the bulk, and, instead, quasi-long range order emerges. Correlation functions for weak disorder case are calculated exactly via the functional renormalization group approach (see [1] for a review). We investigate the case of strong surface randomness and the effect of edge randomness on two-dimensional systems. Our results can be applied to the problem of characterization of disordered surfaces. [1] D.E. Feldman, Int. J. Mod. Phys. B 22, 2945 (2001).
