High Speed Reconnection in the Low Corona
Abstract
High cadence observations taken with the Transition Region and Corona Explorer (TRACE) instrument in the 1600Å\ band (with ≈~2 second cadence) and in the Fe~IX/X 171Å\ band (≈~8 seconds cadence) reveal fast reconnection events of several types. The most common is a newly emerging magnetic loop that reconnects with an overlying fan of loops. As the loops intersect, material is injected into the overlying loops. A newly formed small bright condensation travels in a helical path with a pitch angle of about 45 degrees and a speed of 700 to 1000 km/s. Movies of example events in both spectral bands will be shown. This work was supported by NASA contract NAS5-38099.
