Multi-Satellite Measurements of Lightning from a Storm on the Gulf of Mexico
Abstract
On September 20, 2001, the FORTE and TRMM platforms made simultaneous measurements of a storm southwest of New Orleans. There is spatial and temporal coincidence between the optical data from LIS on TRMM and the optical data from FORTE. The LIS flash and stroke level data provide the context for interpretation of the high-time resolution optical data from FORTE. The FORTE VHF receiver was slaved to the optical system, resulting in RF diagnostic records matching many of the LIS optical strokes. Additional data sets from satellite and ground based systems provide the context for the storm history, precipitation, cloud dimensions and atmospheric environment
