Low-redshift Evolution of Galaxies in the SDSS
Abstract
We measure the galaxy luminosity function in five visual bands using a flux limited spectroscopic sample of galaxies in the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS), between redshifts 0 and 0.2. We extensively test the robustness and accuracy of our magnitude measurements and our K-corrections. We detect evolution in the galaxy luminosity function within this range of redshifts at high significance. The r-band luminosity function can be used to calculate the selection function for clustering analyses of the SDSS. The low redshift luminosity density evolution yields an extra constraint on models of the star-formation history of the universe.
