Analysis of Sky Fluctuations from HEXTE V
Abstract
Blank sky exposures at energies above 10 keV are obtained incidentally as background fields for the HEXTE clusters. We propose to extend our AO1-AO3 and AO5 measurements of differences of these paired fields, separated by 3 deg, to better determine the fluctuation level of the diffuse x-ray background. Analysis to date of data totaling 36 Ms yields significant measurements of the fluctuation RMS to 40 keV which are consistent with HEAO-1 results. This continuing study samples the source population at a distance of z=0.3, much deeper than can be studied from individual detections, and is the first detection of such a distant population at energies above 10 keV. These results can constrain virtually all the current models of the origin of the x-ray background.
