Application of the OSL dating for stratigraphic correlation of Late Weichselian and Holocene sediments in the Lithuanian Maritime Region
Abstract
The Lithuanian Maritime Region of the Baltic Sea is notable for widely spread sandy sediments of different stages of Baltic Sea development — from post-glacial (Late Weichselian) to recently settled marine sediments. The OSL dating of about 70 sandy sediments was performed during the large-scale (1 : 50 000) geological mapping of this region. For some boreholes radiocarbon ( 14C) dating and palaeobotanical studies were also carried out. A good agreement of the OSL ages with 14C dating results and palaeobotanical data has been revealed for marine, lacustrine and aeolian sediments. The overestimation of OSL ages for Baltic Ice Lake sediments is caused by a very rapid sedimentation and the resultant insufficient bleaching.
