Indirect fusion targets for heavy ion driver scenario: The investigations at VNIIEF
Abstract
Inertial fusion with a driver on the basis of a heavy ion accelerator is one of the directions of research at VNIIEF. Basic results of theoretical, numerical and experimental investigations in the past few years are reported. The parameters of the "Russian" target design with converters on the side surface of a cylindrical casing and a spherical DT capsule were studied. It was proved numerically that in this target design ignition may be achieved with realistic heavy ion driver parameters: 10 GeV heavy ions (Bi or Pt), beam energy 10-20 MJ, power up to 1200 TW/cm 2.
