The BEST Lab : Fostering the Growth of Geoscience Education at an Historically Black University
Abstract
Norfolk State University's BEST Lab (Bringing Education and Science Together) has been engaged in promoting the use of scientific visualization tools and techniques for all learners. Within the context of Global Climate Change studies, the BEST Lab is involved in a number of projects that involve scientists and educators in a dialog about promoting authentic inquiry using remote sensing data sets, primarily from environmental satellites. As the university's Center of Excellence in Science Education, the BEST Lab also provides a venue for pre-service and in-service teacher professional development using pedagogically appropriate tools such as WorldWatcher from Northwestern University and the Studying Earth's Environment from Space (SEES) modules developed at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. An overview of BEST Lab projects will be presented in this paper, along with some of the outcomes achieved over the past five years.
