Comparison of IMAGE EUV plasma plume images with LANL geosynchronous in situ plasma observations
Abstract
Images from the IMAGE EUV instrument of plasmaspheric plumes that appear to cross geosynchronous orbit are compared with the "picture" of plasmaspheric plasma derived from multiple geosynchronous satellite observations. In addition, quiet intervals when geosyncnrhounous spacecraft observed plasmaspheric plasma for extended intervals are compared with IMAGE EUV plasmapause location estimates. A comparison of the data is revealing the complexity and temporal variability of the outer plasmasphere and helps put the in situ observations into global context by separating spatial from temporal variability. Estimates of the density gradients responsible for the IMAGE EUV intensity gradients are also determined.
