Diatom Biostratigraphy of ODP Site 1140, Kerguelen Plateau
Abstract
Ocean Drilling Program Leg 183 Site 1140 provided a middle Miocene to lower Oligocene record of diatom assemblages from the Northern Kerguelen Plateau. Samples were examined to improve the resolution of shipboard diatom biostratigraphy. The material is complimentary to that recovered by ODP Legs 119 and 120 and the biostratigraphic zonation of Harwood and Maruyama was readily applied. A standard succession of zones from the lower Miocene and lower Oligocene was noted, although some zones were not present as a result of poor recovery. The detailed diatom biostratigraphy presented here agrees with shipboard calcareous nannofossil biostratigraphy, together these records have the potential of increasing the resolution and understanding of the biostratigraphic record of this area. Linear sedimentation rates based on diatom bioevents average 1.26 cm/k.y. through the study area, indicating low oceanic sedimentation rates.
