A Search for Abnormal Rotational Velocities and Abundances in G-K Giants
Abstract
The recent discovery of many Jupiter-mass planets in close orbits around stars outside our Solar System raises questions about the deaths of such planets. During the red giant evolutionary phases, a star's planets may be consumed by the expanding star, providing a rotational spin-up and abundance enhancements. We have started a survey of G5-K5 giants with a modern spectroscopic telescope to look for signatures of such planets, including rapid rotation and abundance anomalies. Preliminary results of our survey will be presented.
