Stability Properties of Two-Fluid Accretion Shocks with Multiple Cooling Processes
Abstract
We have carried out a linear analysis of accretion shocks with multiple cooling processes and different electron and ion temperatures. We found that the decoupling of the electron and ion temperatures can introduce instability. A cyclotron-cooling dominated shock, which is generally stable if the electrons and ions have equal temperatures, can become unstable when the electron and ion temperatures are decoupled.
