On the interrelation between Gibbs hypotheses and symmetry postulate
Abstract
The question of the origin of the Gibbsfactorials is reconsidered. It is argued, using the example of the Brownian motion, that their appearance in classical statistical calculations cannot in general be traced back to the symmetry postulate of quantum mechanics as often assumed.
