a Study of Cyclotron Scattering Resonance Features in the Spectrum of CEN X-3
Abstract
We propose to investigate cyclotron scattering resonance features in the spectrum of the binary X-ray pulsar Cen X-3. Observations with Ginga are consistent with a cyclotron absorption feature at 30 keV in Cen X-3 but the results are inconclusive because this energy lies above the instrument's bandpass. Using PCA and HEXTE in combination it will be possible for the first time to perform pulse and orbital phase resolved spectroscopy on the cyclotron features of this system. This will allow us to determine the emission geometry and the structure of the accretion columns.
