Quantum gravity as a ``sum over surfaces''
Abstract
I describe recent work in quantum gravity, done in collaboration with Michael Reisenberger. Starting from the loop representation, I derive a description of the dynamics of quantum gravity in terms of a sum over (topologically inequivalent) 2is d surfaces spacetime. This formulation provides an expansion which apparently is finite and computable order by order. Moreover, it has surprising similarities with string theory and with certain topological quantum field theories.
