Mineralogy and Origin of Brassy, Sulfide-rich Masses in the Gibeon IVA Iron
Abstract
It is suggested on the basis of a study of the mineralogy and origin of brassy, sulfide-rich masses in the Gibeon IVA iron that the brassy mineral assemblage was formed in situ due to the invasion of gaseous sulfur along grain boundaries and cracks, and due to the reaction between sulfur and kamacite in the presence of daubreelite at low temperatures. Such a mechanism would account for textures and mineral composites of the brassy masses in a way consistent with low-temperature phase relations in the Fe-Cr-S and Fe-Ni-S systems.
