Investigation of the Validity of Highly Evolved Asteroid Families
Abstract
Previous studies have indicated that dynamical and taxonomic studies of asteroid families only note possible family memberships and interlopers, and are unable to identify probable or even plausible relationships between asteroids. While only direct sampling will absolutely define genetic relationships, a detailed compositional study that combines ground-based visible and near-IR spectral data of dynamically associated asteroids can indicate probable genetic relationships.
