SO2 Detected on Callisto
Abstract
An 0.28 micron absorption feature that has been detected in IUE observations on Callisto's leading and Jupiter-facing hemispheres is discussed. This feature is similar to the 0.28 micron one observed on Europa's trailing hemisphere, which has been associated with SO2. While the Europa feature is correlated with magnetospheric ion bombardment, it is argued here that the Callisto feature may be related to meteor impact.
